IF RESISTANCE IS THE PROBLEM, USE MOLECULES TO WHICH RESISTANCE DOES NOT ARISE

In 2018 approximately 28% of bacterial infections were resistant to one or more antibiotics. By 2050 it is estimated this will increase to 40% and result in an additional 10 million deaths per annum. (The Biologist 68 no4). Globally, it has been identified that misuse and abuse of antimicrobials in agriculture has been a major contributor to this super problem. Many countries have taken steps to ban or limit the use of antibiotics in poultry, pigs, cows and aquaculture. The FAO has proposed an action plan on AMR 2021-2025. The goal is to build resilience in the food and agriculture sector by limiting the emergence and spread of AMR.

By providing a non antibiotic solution to building this resilience, combined with improving animal performance markers and limiting residues to environmentally benign products, the Aga technology leads the field as an intervention to help meet the 5 key objectives of this action plan. Particularly, objective 4, Promoting responsible use of antimicrobials. Along side in treated animal populations, helping to meet the two FAO goals of 1. Reducing AMR prevalence and slowing or preventing the spread of resistance across the food chain for all food and agriculture sectors, at the same time as 2. Preserving the ability to treat actively or prophylactically infections with effective and safe antimicrobials to sustain food and agriculture production.

WHO Global issues on antibiotics in the food chain

Over 50% of antibiotics consumed globally are given to animals to treat or prevent infections and to boost growth. Many strains of bacteria are now resistant to antibiotics within animal healthcare. It is estimated that more than 1500 annual deaths in the European Union are directly related to antibiotic use in poultry. Another example is the well documented risk of transmission of infection from livestock to farmers, vets and others in close contact to the animals, which can result in severe infections. We are looking for partners in the agricultural sector.
